What Is a Golf Handicap?
A golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer's potential playing ability. It allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly against each other by adjusting scores so a beginner and an experienced golfer can play a meaningful match.
The official system used worldwide is the USGA World Handicap System (WHS), introduced in 2020. Instead of measuring your average score, a handicap measures your potential — it's calculated from your best recent rounds, not all of them. This means your handicap reflects how good you can be on a good day.
In Ready Golf League, your handicap is used to calculate your net score for each matchup, so every head-to-head competition is fair regardless of skill difference.
How Is a Handicap Calculated?
The USGA system uses a stat called a Handicap Differential for each round you play. Every golf course has two published numbers: a Course Rating (the expected score for a scratch golfer) and a Slope Rating (how much harder the course is for an average golfer vs. a scratch golfer).
Once you have differentials, your Handicap Index is calculated by averaging the lowest differentials from your recent rounds, then multiplying by 0.96 (a 4% "bonus for excellence").
- Play a round and record your gross score (total strokes before any handicap adjustment).
- Note the Course Rating and Slope Rating printed on the scorecard for the tees you played.
- Calculate your Handicap Differential for that round using the formula above.
- Repeat for multiple rounds (minimum 3). The more rounds you have, the more accurate your handicap.
- Take the average of your lowest differentials (the number used depends on how many rounds you have — see below) and multiply by 0.96.
Which differentials count? With 3–4 rounds, only your single best is used. With 5 rounds, your best 1. With 6–8, your best 2. With 9–10, your best 3 — and so on up to 20 rounds, where your best 8 of 20 are averaged. This is why your handicap represents potential, not average.
Estimate Your Handicap Index
Enter at least 3 recent scores below. Include the Course Rating and Slope from your scorecard (look on the back of the card near the tee color you played). The calculator will compute your differential for each round and estimate your Handicap Index.

Tips & Common Questions
Where do I find Course Rating and Slope? They're printed on the scorecard, usually in a table by tee color. The Course Rating is a number like 71.4 and the Slope is between 55 and 155. A standard course has a Slope of 113.
What's a "good" handicap? The average male golfer in the US has a handicap around 14–16. The average female golfer is around 26–28. Anything under 10 is considered a low handicap.
Is this an official handicap? No — this is an estimate for informational purposes. For an official USGA Handicap Index, you need to join an authorized golf club or use the GHIN system. The math here uses the same WHS formula, but official handicaps also include adjustments for exceptional scores, playing conditions, and other factors.
How does RGL use my handicap? In Ready Golf League, you enter your handicap when you submit a score. The system converts it to a Course Handicap using the slope and rating of the course you played, then subtracts it from your gross score to get your net score. The player with the lower net score wins the matchup.
